ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Liz and Yvonne Kane create a highly exciting and vibrant sound. These sisters come from the outskirts of Letterfrack, a village in Connemara. With a musical tradition on both sides of the family, it was only natural for the girls to play music. They began learning from their grandfather Jimmy Mullin. Along with their grandfather the recordings of the Rainey brothers, traveling fiddle players who visited Letterfrack and the surrounding areas were an influence.
Yvonne and Liz consider their style to be heavily influenced by South Sligo fiddle playing, the music of East Galway and in particular the fiddle playing and compositions of Paddy Fahey. In recent years, the sisters have been privileged to meet and play with Paddy whose music plays a central role in their repertoire. The recordings of Michael Coleman, Hughie Gillespie, Andy McGann and Kathleen Collins have also made an impact on their music.

Edel Fox is one of the most accomplished Irish musicians of her generation. She is a regular performer on Irish National Radio and has performed at festivals and in concert halls from North America all the way to Asia. In 2004, Edel was awarded one of the highest honors for a traditional musician in Ireland - the TG4 Young Musician of the Year award. In addition to being an engaging performer, Edel is an insightful and patient teacher, specializing in the repertoire of her native soil. She is on staff at the prestigious Willie Clancy Summer School in her home town, Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare. She also teaches annually at festivals in the US, including the Irish Arts Week Festival in East Durham, New York and the Elkins Irish Week in Augusta, West Virginia.
The sisters play very tightly together. In fact, rather than playing off each other and making contrasting individual statements, they choose to stay close at all times, the result being a powerful and gorgeous unison sound. Edel Fox is a former pupil of concertina master Noel Hill. Such is the musicianship of these young players that you'll find yourself listening to every little turn of phrase.

Great Irish Music and Dancing happening this week around Philadelphia

This week there will be some great Irish music happening throughout the City. Hope to see you at one of these great events!

On Thursday, June 17th

At the Plough and the Stars, a great Irish Pub in old city Philadelphia on 2nd Street, Derek Warfield and the Young WolfTones at the Plough on Thursday, June 17 at 8pm. Raymond Coleman from Tyrone will be singing and playing from 6pm. Derek there in March and gave a 3 hour concert which was fantastic. They sing all the great WolfTones anthems like 'The Streets of New York', 'Celtic Symphony' and of course beautiful ballads like 'Grace'. Tickets are $20 at the door.

On May 2nd, during the torrential storms and resulting floods that hit Nashville and the surrounding towns,  over 50 Philadelphia area travelers were stranded for  several hours in the town of Kingston Springs, Tennessee.  The folks in this little town offered us food, water and even lodgings.  They have lost many homes, businesses and even schools as a result of the floods.  The Travelers ended up having a ceilidh in the parking lot of the gas station where we were stranded, which eventually made its way to YouTube.  Money is being raised to donate back to them  to thank them for their  gracious   hospitality to our fellow Philadelphians.  Come to the June Rambling House with live music by the Gas Pump Ceili Band, dancing, refreshments, trivia and great raffle prizes.  All are welcome, tell your friends!  For information:

Established husband and wife duet Pat Egan (guitar, vocals) and Laura Byrne Egan (flute, whistle and vocals) perform often with young Baltimore fiddle wizard Jim Eagan. These three have been making mighty music together for many years!   
    Laura and Jim have anchored a popular weekly tune session at Baltimore’s hallowed home of Irish music and dance, J. Patrick’s Pub, for almost 10 years. In April they won 1st prize in the duets category at the east coast Fleadh (traditional Irish music competitions) in New York.
   Jim also performs and records with O’Malley’s March, and has released a stunning solo CD – “At Reavy’s House” – featuring tunes written by the revered Philadelphia-based fiddler/composer, County Cavan man Ed Reavy (1897-1988). This show will be a tribute to Ed, showcasing some of the trio’s favorite Reavy tunes, with maybe a few surprises thrown in.
   Laura’s fine flute CD “Tune for the Road” came out in 2005.  She founded and directs The Baltimore Irish Arts Center and teaches traditional Irish wooden flute at Goucher College.
   Pat grew up singing and playing (in County Tipperary) and has been a professional musician since 1985. He tours internationally with the Irish band Chulrua, along with Paddy O’Brien (button accordion) and Patrick Ourceau (fiddle). Pat is admired for his smooth, lyrical vocals, his honest delivery and his repertoire of storied songs.

Oisin Mac Diarmada (fiddle)
A graduate in Music Education from Trinity College Dublin/RIAM, Oisín Mac Diarmada began playing fiddle at a young age in Co. Clare, subsequently moving to Co. Sligo and developing a deep interest in the playing style of the North Connacht region. Following the release of acclaimed solo album, "Ar an bhFidil" (Green Linnet) in 2003, Oisín was subsequently featured in renowned US magazine “Strings” and described by The Irish Echo's Earle Hitchner as "one of the most gifted and creative traditional fiddlers playing today." Founder of noted group Téada, Oisín is also a regular solo performer, appearing
recently as guest soloist with the Southern Georgia Symphony Orchestra. Awarded a Research  Studentship by Dundalk Institute of Technology, Oisín is currently pursuing postgraduate studies under the direction of Dr. Fintan Vallely in the area of “Political Identity & Movement to Music”.

Damien Connelly (button accordion) Damien began learning the accordion when he was 11 years old, taught of course by his father Martin, and was coached here and there by his elder brother Karl, who had begun before him. At age 13 his family moved to the town of Ennis, Co. Clare where he came in touch with many people his own age who played music. He competed in the Fleadhanna with his friends in the groupai cheol and ceili band competitions, with a group under the direction of the Deirdre O' Brien Vaughan. At age 16, he took up the fiddle, under the tutelage of his step-mother Maureen Glynn. In 1997, Damien took first place in both the Under-18 All Ireland accordion and melodeon competition held in Ballina, Co. Mayo. The following year, Damien recorded three melodeon tracks on his father's CD entitled Back to Brooklyn. In 2000, he recorded his first accordion and melodeon CD, Tippin Away, accompanied by guitarist Pete Mancuso of NY. This CD was generously praised by Joe Burke, Joe Derrane and Bobby Gardiner.n 2005 Damien was asked to teach at the Catskills Irish Arts Week in East Durham and has been teaching there every year since. He also wrote the Irish Accordion Tutor which is unlike any other.

Damien Stenson (flute)
Hailing from the rich musical environment of Co. Sligo, 29-year-old Damien Stenson is noted for his extensive repertoire and flowing style of playing, honed by many years of extensive musical activity. He is featured on a number of albums including the compilation "Wooden Flute Obsession Vol. 2", Oisín Mac Diarmada's solo album "Ar an bhFidil”, along with a recent bodhrán album by Junior Davey.

Patsy O'Brien (guitar/bouzouki))

Patsy O’Brien, guitarist and award winning singer/songwriter. Irish music critic Paul Dromey has called O’Brien “ Ireland ’s best-kept musical secret.” 

Tristan Rosenstock (bodhrán)
From Glenageary in Co Dublin, Tristan's bodhrán playing encompasses a distinctive musical sensitivity, evident on a number of recordings and tours with which he has had involvement in recent years. Prominent in Dublin musical circles, Tristan recently completed a Masters in Film & Television Studies from Dublin City University. He presently combines freelance media work alongside performing with Téada.
