How the West of Ireland Helped to Save Uilleann Bagpiping

The Philadelphia Ceili Group presents the third event in its 2011-2012 Music Series
“How the West of Ireland Helped to Save Uilleann Bagpiping”, an informative talk by Dr. Scott B. Spencer with accompaniment and demonstration by the talented piper Ivan Goff will be presented on February 18, 2012 at 3:30 pm. The discussion by Dr. Spencer, the most recent Visiting Research Scholar at the Centre for Irish Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway in association with the American Irish Cultural Institute, will cover the recent history and revival of Uilleann bagpiping.
The lecture is from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and will be followed by an evening concert starting at 8:00 pm featuring piper Ivan Goff and guitarist/singer Eamon O’Leary.

Dr. Scott B. Spencer is an Adjunct Professor in the Honors department at Villanova University, and has recently taught courses on Irish music at Drew University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and for NYU's summer program at Trinity College Dublin. He is the most recent Visiting Research Scholar at the Centre for Irish Studies at the National University of Ireland, Galway in association with the American Irish Cultural Institute. He has published articles on Irish music and sonic studies in variety of journals and books - most recently on the subject of this talk for the Journal of the Society for American Music. Spencer has acted as the Associate Director of the CUNY Institute for Irish American Studies, and worked administratively at NYU's Glucksman Ireland House. He has also coordinated the Center for Traditional Irish-American Music at the CUNY-IIAS in The Bronx. He holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from New York University, plays flute with the Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra, and lives with his family in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

Based in Brooklyn, Dubliner Ivan Goff plays Irish concert flute and uilleann pipes.
In addition to duets with many traditional musicians such as Míchéal Ó Raghallaigh, Tony DeMarco, and Iarla Ó Lionáird, Ivan has also performed with internationally acclaimed Irish traditional bands Dervish, Danú, Téada, Lúnasa, The Green Fields of America with Mick Moloney, is a former member of Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul and was featured in several well-known productions including extended engagements with Riverdance.
While growing up in Dublin, Eamon O’Leary developed an interest in Irish music through his friendship with the Mayock family, noted traditional musicians originally from County Mayo. When he moved to New York City in 1992, he met guitarist John Doyle and fiddle player Patrick Ourceau, among others, and has since become a fixture in the city’s thriving Irish music scene. Eamon has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, performing with many of Irish music’s great players, including Paddy Keenan, Mick Moloney, Tommy Peoples, and James Keane, and has recorded with singer Susan McKeown and flute player Emer Mayock.
