“How the West of Ireland Helped to Save Uilleann Bagpiping” a lecture by Dr. Scott Spencer, Visiting Research Scholar, NUI Galway / American Irish Cultural Institute, wtih an evening Concert with Ivan Goff and Eamon O'Leary
By the 1960’s very few Uilleann bagpipers remained in Ireland and the tradition was on the edge of vanishing. In 1968, a small number of pipers and enthusiasts formed Na Piobairi Uilleann (the Piper’s Club). These dedicated pipers traveled to Clare and Galway to meet with some of the remaining tradition bearers and document their knowledge. The results of these early projects can still be found in the repertoire of today’s pipers. This will all be discussed by Dr. Spencer who will be accompanied by a special performance by Uilleann piper, Ivan Goff.
