Join us for Paddy O’Neill with his tunes on the Flute from North Ireland, original tunes from John Brennan on fiddle and guitar, John McGillian on accordion playing his favorites, Caitlin Finley playing fiddle tunes from Andy McGann and others and Paraic Keane playing fiddle tunes from Dublin will entertain you. 

 

The following Workshops will also be available from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.: Northern Tunes on Flute, Guitar Accompaniment, Button Accordion, and Fiddle.  Pre-registration for workshops required and can be done on-line at: www.philadelphiaceiligroup.org.  For more information regarding workshops please contact Tom O’Malley at philaceiligroup@aol.com. 

All performers are donating their talents to the Ceili Group and all the funds will be used to support the Festival.  An Open Session will follow the concert.  Donation for concert is $15.  Special combination donation for Concert and workshop - $25.

Radio show to air Tribute to Tommy Moffit

There will be a special tribute show to Tommy Moffit this week on Marianne MacDonald's radio show, featuring his music along with his favorite musicians and singers. She will take phone calls throughout the show from anyone who would like to share a memory or story about Tommy.  The phone number is (856)962-8178.  Please feel free to call in.

A sad announcement - the passing of a friend

It is with a very sad heart that we share the news that our good friend Tommy Moffit passed away this on May 11th.

The following are the arrangements as we know them:

Viewing: Friday evening, May 14th - 6 to 9pm, St. Joseph's Church, 7631 Waters Road, (Boncouer & Waters Roads) Cheltenham, PA

Viewing: Saturday morning, May 15th - 8:30 to 9:45 am Presentation B.V.M. Church, 100 Old Soldier's Road, Cheltenham, PA Followed by Funeral Mass at 10:00 am

"Tommy Moffit was born to Catherine McDonough and Michael Moffit on December 11, 1930 in Errisaune, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. The youngest of four children, Tommy had two sisters and one brother. Tommy immigrated to the U.S.A. at the age of 16 with his sister Kathleen after the passing of their parents who died within three months of one another. They came, initially, to Atlantic City to an Uncle Tom McDonough who was a very good accordian player sparking Tommy’s interest and he soon taught himself the instrument. By 18, Tommy was out playing on his own. Upon moving to Philadelphia, he played at all the basement and kitchen sessions around in the hallowed company of Ed Reavy Sr., Joe Vesey and Tomas Standeven ...
Tom met his wife, the late Peggy (Harrington) Moffit at a ceili and they had three children. For 15 years, Tommy was a fixture on Sunday nights at the Irish Center’s Fireside Room in Philadelphia. Tommy has played locally at every group’s ceilithe, every Irish pub and every Irish festival and benefit. He has been the emcee for the Philadelphia Ceili Group’s annual Traditional Music Festival for years and he has been an active and vocal supporter of CCE-Delaware Valley since its inception."

The above was written by Marianne MacDonald when Tommy was elected to the Hall of Fame in the Mid-Atlantic Region of CCE some years ago.

THE YELLOW BITTERN, a new feature documentary from Alan Gilsenan, is a revealing and surprising portrait of the longest surviving member of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and the man that Bob Dylan called “just the best ballad singer I’d ever heard in my whole life”.

This intimate, confessional and highly cinematic film charts the remarkable rise to fame of these devil-may-care Irish singers, from their small-town beginnings in County Tipperary in Ireland to the folk hey-day of Greenwich Village in the Sixties where they absorbed black musical influences, played for JFK and out-sold the Beatles. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem would go on to influence a host of popular artists from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger to The Pogues, and become a powerful iconic presence on the Irish cultural map.
