Frank Malley

It is with great sadness that I must report the death of a dear friend and long-time Ceili Group member.

 

MALLEY, FRANCIS JOSEPH, of West Mount Airy formerly from Chestnut Hill and “The Highlands” in Ambler, Montgomery County PA on July 25, 2009 died.  Beloved son of the late Katherine [nee Duffy] from Skaheen, Kilmovee, Mayo, Ireland and Patrick Malley from Coor Point Donegal, Ireland.  Devoted father to Courtney Katherine[Sam Cohen] Malley and Bryan Patrick Malley. Loving grandpa to Rosemarie Munn, Ryan Malley, Emily Kiefer, Keiran Cohen and Katherine Cohen. Brother to John [Sarah] Malley and James [Marikay] Malley.  Also survived by dear companion Connie Koppe, his former wife Rose Marie Malley (nee Burke) many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from the United States and Ireland.  Frank was a structural steel detailer.    He was a member of the Philadelphia Ceili Group, serving on the board and as Chairman for the Philadelphia Ceili  Group’s Irish Festival for many years and a member of the Philadelphia Folk Song Society for over 35 years.  Frank was also a musician and avid storyteller.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009, 3:00 p.m. at the Irish Center located at Emlen St and Carpenter Ln in West Mt Airy.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any one of the  Breast Cancer 3-Day “Team Canada” members at www.the3day.org.

then come join “Handy with a Stick” at 9 p.m. in leading a session at the Mermaid Inn, Germantown Pike, Chestnut Hill.

Skip Healy is widely regarded as one of the finest American fife and Traditional Irish wooden flute players, makers and educators. He has won numerous championships for solo and quartet American fife playing, and C.C.E. titles for Irish flute and tin whistle. In 1989, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts honored him as "Master Musician for the State of

In 2008, Skip had a solo performance at Carnigie Hall.

Albert Alfonso is the man the legendary Mick Moloney dubbed "The Celtic-Cuban Connection." Born in

New York City

, he is a first generation American, son of Cuban and Haitian immigrants who moved to

Miami

where he grew up and his influence was mainly Cuban music. Later, in his mid-20's, Albert settled in

Dallas

,

TX

.  In the late 1970's, Albert became involved in Irish music, playing the piano and button accordions, and the bodhran. In 1983, he and others formed a ceili that would become known as the very first North Texas Irish Festival (NTIF). Albert has been a director of this festival, and has served as vice president and president of its governing sponsoring organization, the Southwest Celtic Music Association (SCMA).

 

In the early 1990's, Albert began making bodhrans, which can now be found in every state as well as in

. He would like to think that at any given time, "one is in the air going somewhere" in the world to be played onstage. He has conducted numerous drum workshops across North America, and also at the Royal Academy of Music in

Angelina Carberry was born in Manchester in the late 70’s into an Irish (County. Longford) family steeped in traditional music, It wasn’t long before her interest and keen ear for the tunes began to develop. Starting on the tin whistle she soon moved to the banjo, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. She has since developed a highly personal style with an exciting rhythm that captivates anyone lucky enough to hear it. In 1998 Angelina moved to and established herself on the local music scene. She attracted notice with a CD entitled "Memories of the Holla" which she made with her father, accordion player Peter Carberry, and the great John Blake on guitar. Her second album, a duet with Martin Quinn, confirmed her tremendous talents as a player and her wonderful tastes for lesser known tunes. Her most recent CD, “An Traidisiun Beo”,is a solo, which means that although Martin Quinn and John Blake show up on some tunes, the banjo is the featured instrument and appears solo on a majority of the tracks. In addition to her duet work with Martin, Angelina has toured Europe with the traditional Irish band The Bumblebees.

Martin Quinn comes from a family of musicians and tellers of traditional stories with roots in County Armagh. At an early age he developed an interest in traditional music and especially that of the button accordion. He first took up that instrument in 1981 and now possesses a highly refined style, being regarded as one of Ireland's finest exponent's of the button-box. In 1996 Martin received his diploma from the Irish Department of Education for teaching the button accordion. He began his professional career as a musician in 1994 and has toured Europe and the with the bands Dorsa and Lá Lugh, appearing at festivals in France, Finland,Britain, Germany.

Paired together (Angelina and Martin are married) these two young musicians have a deep understanding of traditional music and a love and respect for it that shines through in every note they play. Their unmistakable sound is at times dark and earthy, with a deeply grounded rhythm - All the while swinging with abandon! The momentum is measured and unstoppable, with the banjo's regular throb complementing the box's open tones. There is something very satisfying in this combination.Join us for their very first appearance at the Irish Center on Friday, July 10 as Angelina and Martin deliver a spellbinding and intimate evening of Irish traditional music in our cozy Fireside Room.
