A Wish List from the Ceili Group

Hi Folks - We at the Philadelphia Ceili Group are in need of a few things to make our office at the Irish Center functional. If you can help us out with any of these items, you will be blessed with good luck for all time. (kinda) Seriously, we are looking for: 1. Someone who has the skills to replace a phone jack in our office. 2. A large metal storage cabinet that has the ability to be locked. 3. A desk that measures less then 6 feet across and has at least 2 drawers. Please respond to mcniffa@gmail.com if you can help us out with any of these items.

PAT O'CONNOR comes from Ennis in County Clare and has been playing music all his life. As a child he studied piano-accordion, banjo, mandolin and bouzouki, before finally settling on the fiddle as his weapon of choice. Fans of traditional music may have run across Pat's first solo CD THE GREEN MOUNTAIN, featuring his unhurried brand of fiddle playing ... simply lovely in its simplicity and genuineness. His second CD release, HUMOURS OF DERRYBEHA, very much in the same vein, consists mostly of solo tracks and a couple of tasty duets with concertina and flute. To hear Pat play is to experience the intangible and elusive "lonesome touch" of County Clare fiddling.

EOGHAN O'SULLIVAN is a talented musician from Mitchelstown, in County Cork and has been playing flute and accordion since he was six. Regarded as one of Ireland's finest young accordionists, Eoghan has recorded THE SMOKY CHIMNEY (with Kerry fiddler Gerry Harrington), a classic CD of traditional Irish music from that magical area on the Cork-Kerry border known as Sliabh Luachra (pronounced Shleeve Lew-cra). Together, Eoghan and Pat play the “pure drop” of Irish traditional music, and this promises to be a very special evening

Friday, March 27 the monthly "4th Friday" Ceili Dance - 8:00 pm, at the Irish Center - Live music to accompany the Dancers. All experience levels welcome

also on Friday will be the Philadelphia Ceil Group Learning Session. Interested in learning to play Irish Turnes as a Session - this is where you want to come! The room will be open about 7:00 pm and the learning session will start at 7:30 pm and end at 9:00 pm. Please have your instrument in-tune and ready to play at 7:30. Requested donation $3.00, Philadelphia Ceili Group Members - Free

Wednesday April 1 - Singers Session - - Don't miss it! Sponsored by the Philadelphia Ceili Group, the monthly singers session will be held on Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30 PM Bring a song to share, Singers at all levels welcome. Session is lead by Terry Kane. If you are really motivated bring a snack too!

Irish Traditional Music Session Tonight (Friday) at the Irish Center

Irish Traditional Music Session

When: Friday, March 20, 2009, 8 – 11pm + Where :     The Commodore Barry Club (the Irish Center)   From 8-9 there is a slow session. This is a traditional Irish session in all ways except one: the tempo. We will play common session tunes at a slower than normal pace, so that beginning and intermediate players can more easily learn the tunes and join in the session. Also great for experienced players who are picking up another instrument! Want to learn to play traditional Irish fiddle?  The Irish Center is now sponsoring fiddle lessons for anyone interested in learning – beginner, intermediate, or advanced.  Two of the area’s most accomplished players will be teaching as a team.  The instructors are:

 

 

Caitlin Finley and Padraig Keane.  Caitlin is a student of Brian Conway, the renowned Sligo style fiddler.  Padraig learned fiddle from his father, Sean Keane of the Chieftains.
