Very Special Workshops at the Irish Center - A Reminder

Uilleann Piper Supreme, Paddy Keenan: 2 Workshops at Irish Center - (sponsored by the Phila Ceili Group)This very special event, sponsored by the Philadelphia Ceili Group, is not something to miss if you play the uilleann pipes.

Paddy Keenan will be playing a concert at Philadelphia's World Café on May 21. He will be giving two workshops the next night at The Irish Center - the evening of May 22. The first workshop will be for whistle and low whistle players, and he will follow the Teach a Tune format. Unless he doesn't& The second workshop will be for pipers, and will be a great opportunity to observe and ask about specific techniques, opinions and choices of this Master Piper. To make it easy for people to come out on a weeknight, we're going to lay out a dinner and open the doors at 6:00pm. There will be hamburgers, chicken, sausage and some less important things. Likely a session will start after dinner, and continue thru the evening. The session will go `til it's over.

The whistle players will have a workshop from about 6:45 to 7:35 and the pipers will have theirs from 7:45 to 8:35.

Cost for each workshop will be $30 and the cost for the dinner only will be $5.
No need to attend either workshop or dinner, if you just want to come to the session or to listen.

NOTE: Each workshop will be limited to ten people and at this late date there are still a few openings; to secure a spot prepayment is required.

May 17th - Philadelphia Ceili Group Special Event

SEAN TYRRELL IN "THE CRY OF A DREAMER"

Saturday, May 17th, 8:00 P.M.

The Irish Center (The Commodore Barry Club)

The Philadelphia Ceili Group in conjunction with the Irish Repertory Theatre of Philadelphia presents Sean Tyrrell in his own man show about the life and times of Irish visionary, poet, patriot, rebel, activist, revolutionary John Boyle O'Reilly. O'Reilly (1844-1890) was persecuted, condemned and banished from Ireland to the Penal Colonies of Australia for his political beliefs and activities. Sean's love of traditional music is very much to the fore as the story is cleverly tied together with jigs, reels, a march and a few slow airs. Using a variety of instruments, Sean weaves effortlessly between narrative, instrumentals and song. For more information on Sean and on the show you can visit www.irishphiladelphia.com for an interview with Sean or read a fascinating article in the Irish Edition written by Mike Reilly. Cost of the concert is $15 and $13 for Ceili Group members. This will be a night to remember as we experience Sean's musical talents combined with the fascinating story of a true Irish rebel.

To reserve seats, call Marianne MacDonald at 856-236-2717 or email rinceseit@msn.com.

Irish Music "slow session"

The Philadelphia Ceili Group's first monthly Slow Session, held at the Irish Center, went well with more than a dozen attendees – a good time was had by all! This was followed by a regular Friday night session where a few more folks joined us. Caitlin did a great job leading tunes on both the fiddle and banjo at a leisurely pace with Tom O’Malley’s guitar backing. We will be holding another session next month on the third Friday – same format. Next month we hope to have Paddy O’Neill join Caitlin & Tom.

Don't forget that on the fourth Friday our Tune Learning Circle runs from 7:30 to 9, also at the Irish Center. We will be playing through a number of tunes commonly played at our area’s sessions. Sheet music is available on the PCG website. This is a good opportunity for beginning & intermediate players as well as experienced player picking up a new instrument.
